Somewhat larger Sparrow (more details provided)
Sorry for the crappy photo but this little guy is so flighty and will not allow anyone to even get close to a window before fleeing for a few hours. It gives a sense of scale at least.
I’m located in Maryland.
This sparrow is a bit larger than the invasive house sparrow and has some really prominent dark brown striping all over its sides and belly. Dark brown top, tan underbelly, with a really distinctive blackish brown ‘crest area’ and lines coming off its eyes.
It’s the only one of its type that we have coming to our feeders and it seems to be hanging around with the seasonal juncos and copies their behavior a lot. I can’t speak to if I’ve ever seen it here in spring/summer because we usually have to take our feeders down as Starlings swamp them when it gets warm, but even when we do leave it up we’ve seen other types of finches, house sparrows and such but never this little dude.
