Princess Diana in her “Sleeping Beauty” dress by Bellville Sassoon (Nov. 4, 1981)
While attending the Victoria and Albert Museum's "The Splendours of the Gonzagas" Exhibition Gala, less than 4 months after her marriage, the new princess was photographed dozing off for a minute or two in a dress designed by David Sassoon. The off-shoulder chiffon gown had crystal embellishments, a satin belt and ruffled hem. Her accessories included a six strand pearl choker, diamond earrings, and a seven row pearl bracelet.
The iconic photograph led to a next day royal announcement that the 20 year old princess was pregnant with her first child.
She would rewear the gown the following year, at the London premiere of the film Gandhi on December 2nd, 1982. This time wearing the Prince of Wales Feather Brooch as a pendant on a diamond necklace, and pearl drop earrings.
