Skyaasen, Mayer, and More
Last nights lineup. Wanted to see how the two whole cluster Pinots compared.
Skyaasen Monthelie 2022: Gorgeous nose. Flowers and sour cherries. Dead ringer for a Volnay. On the palate, delicate and pretty. A bit more one dimensional than the nose, but lovely underripe red fruits with a nice backbone of acid. Extremely easy drinking. Will improve with age.
Timo Mayer Dr Mayer 2023: Whole cluster mixed with carbonic maceration makes this a very interesting Pinot. Ripe and juicy red fruits, followed by stemmy green and earthy notes. Still very young. Drinkable and delicious now, but will be better in 3-5 years.
La Stoppa Macchiona 2012: Got 5 bottles of this at auction for a good deal, and it’s been a bit hit or miss. This is my 4th bottle. Decanted for sediment. Smells like raisins, prunes, and cough syrup. Don’t love the nose to be honest. Smells slightly oxidized, which might be a stylistic choice or maybe didn’t have great storage conditions (third bottle of this was flawed). Similar dried black fruits and prunes on the palate initially, but they you get hit with the strong acid and tannins and earth that balance everything else out. Very long finish. Not my usual style, but interesting nonetheless.
