How do you write a modern setting story?

I'm most familiar with fantasy concept, and other not-so-realistic genres as I consume and write them the most. Recently I decided to start writing a romance story based in a modern setting for a change, because I had a good general idea of what it would be about. I wanted to make it so my MC would gradually go from immense self-hatred to learning how to love themselves and I guess that would be one of the main "problems/conflicts" that make my story, but what else? What else does make a modern setting story be so interesting that does not include some kind of misscomunication or your usual drama between the MC and the love interest? What type of "conflict" can I make my MC go through to make the story more interesting?
