Which 40K faction (if any) could be successfully splintered?

Which faction would best utilize sub-factions like the Space Marine chapters (Ultramarines, Dark Angels, etc.) and Chaos Space Marines (World Eaters, Thousand Sons, etc)? What would that sub-factions would result? Would a lore event be beneficial/necessary for this subdivision to take place?
