It's not said anywhere if anything it's my bad interpretation. I just see it as a more he's "accepted" it himself. I would have to reread some stuff, but when he bites the candy, and the smile on the beach it just seems to me that he doesn't have to be in a relationship with her. As we can see he's conflicted for sure. It's just again different to how both Rintaro and Kaoruko were in love as I would describe it as them both having this intense pull and desire to be with each other and learn more about the other. Like early window/curtain scenes, going to the bakery, inner monologue, ect. Yet Saku doesn't present the same feelings or as near as strong. Which could be him lying to himself for example, but he seems pretty self analyzing so I don't think he would do that. How I would picture it is unless Sabaru changes a lot they would be in a more emotional relationship than Kaoruko and Rintaro. What I mean is more of a emotion affection and supporting each other than anything physical. Which still makes then dating just idk slightly different to your normal romance manga. Like I hope there is one, but I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't a kiss. Just doesn't seem like Subaru would be comftorable with that right now as like what half a year ago she wasn't even comfortable with looking at boys a lot less touching them. Which could lead into being more asexual, but that is just a word and them acting that way would just be a fact of personality and how they are portrayed nothing like oh wow look they're asexual. Again that is a spectrum and not a on and off thing. Like some couples just don't really need or like stuff like kissing and more in the direction instead they rely more on emotional support, vulnerability and the like. Asexual is just a label and them acting like this or not like this doesn't disprove or prove it one way or the other. Again me yapping, I don't know these characters 100%, there thoughts and feelings which aren't told to us, its a story, and I don't know the future. Ultimately it's about where the author plans to go with it and how comftorable/knowledgeable they are on the topic.
